ZINFANDEL

A rich, bold red with a distinctive sharp taste. A big seller in California, zins are capable of producing wines with a robust, elegant character.

Additional review sent in by the feedback form from Matthew Gross (received 4/17/97):
  • REVIEW: Recommended to me by a local wine store as a "typical zin" at a reasonable price ($12.50). Medium body with a dusty ruby color. Pleasant but indistinguishable berry aroma followed by some spice. Not much on the finish to help this wine balance out. C+

Clos Du Bois (Sonoma County) Zinfandel, 1992

We tried it again six months later, and found it even better:
Let me say a few unsolicited words about Clos Du Bois. I have so far always been pleased with wines from Clos Du Bois. Indeed, many of their wine have been superb, and to date I have never been let down by any of their wines. The memorable Clos Du Bois Briarcrest Cabernet was the winner in one of our first wine tasting parties. And we've had fun at their tasting room in Healdsburg: we were given some excellent wines to taste, and they were not the least bit skimpy on the tasting samples (I suspect the people working their were a little sloshed themselves). The mood was festive, the offerings quite tasty, and to top things off, there was a sweet and friendly orange cat on their front lawn. In my book this is a favorable omen.

We tried it again a few months later. As usual, we DIDN'T look at our old reviews first, as we did not want to be influenced by what we said before. top of page

    • REVIEW: I bought this Zinfandel on sale ($10) without any prior knowledge other than having seen the label in many local wine stores and supermarkets. It is very drinkable but does not stand out in any particular area other than a nice spicy berry aroma.

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: Great site, I will be back often!
