Just east of the Coma Berenices naked-eye concenttration of stars is NGC-4565, a spiral galaxy that, due to its edge-on orientation, is one of the most striking deep space objects. On a poor night, it is an elongated blur. On a good night, it is a luminous needle with a ball in the middle. On an excellent night, it is bisected by a dark rift! This celestial sliver with its bright nuclear hub is indeed spectacular.
