Here is a fascinating little galaxy that most star atlases neglect to mention. Listed at the eleventh magnitude, this galaxy seems somewhat brighter because of its promienent nucleus. 404 contains a crescent shaped dust lane which is hard to detect. What is interesting is that it is located less than half a degree from Beta Andromedae, making it easy to find. Beta is a red giant star (the color is obvious) of the second magnitude; put it outside of the field of view to see 404 at its best.
